REPORT BACK:
The "Stregthening Self Determination" delegation brought native
activists
from across Turtle Island to "Indigenous" southern Mexico to meet
diverse
indigenous social movements with whom they exchanged experiences of
struggle for land and freedom in colonial amerika, and reinforced
international networks of solidarity.
On January 1st, the five-member delegation arrived in Zapatista
Autonomous
Territory in time to join the celebrations of the historic 1994
Zapatista
Uprising against 'Neoliberalism and for Humanity'. After 1 week in the
autonomously governed municpality, dubbed "Towards Hope", situated in
the
heart of the Lacandon Jungle, the delegation travelled to Oaxaca to
speak
with communities resisting the industrial infrastructure of the Free
Trade
Area of the Americas, known as Plan Puebla Panama.
Delegation members include activists with:
-- the Native Youth Movement (Toronto and Vancouver chapters), a
grassroots organization active in promoting Indigenous rights in
response
to gang violence and poverty amongst Native youth.
-- the Skwelkwek^?welt Protection Center, who are currently struggling
against
corporate encroachment on Secwepemc territory in interior "British
Columbia", and have been actively opposing the expansion of the Sun
Peaks
Ski Resort on their territories.
